Flying is the easiest and quickest way to get to Kennicott. It is also a spectacular flight through some of Alaska’s most magnificent country. There is a 3,600 foot gravel airport located between McCarthy and Kennicott.
It is about a 2 hour flight from Anchorage, 50 minutes from Glennallen, and 25 minutes from Chitina.
Wrangell Mountain Air flies from Chitina to McCarthy three times each day. The flights depart Chitina at 9:05am, 2:45pm, and 5:45pm and depart from McCarthy at 8:30am, 2:00pm, and 5:00pm.
Reeve Air and Copper Valley Air Service – There are scheduled round trip flights from Anchorage to McCarthy on Mondays and Thursdays. The flight between Anchorage and Glennallen is operated by Reeve Air and the flight between Glennallen and McCarthy is operated Copper Valley Air. Reeve Air also offers direct flights between Anchorage and McCarthy on Saturdays between June 15 and August 17.
You might want to experience both the drive and a flight on your trip to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. You can do this by taking a van from Chitina to McCarthy with the Kennicott Shuttle, and flying back to Chitina with Wrangell Mountain Air or vice versa. This is a great way to see the Park, and can be booked with either company.
