Take An Exciting Alaska Glacier Hike

Alaska Glacier Hike group photoMost Alaskan visitors will see a glacier, but here at Kennicott you can actually walk on a glacier! Local guiding companies offer safe, fully-supervised Alaska glacier hikes right out onto the Root Glacier where you enter a fascinating world of moulons, pressure ridges, fathomless blue water pools and exquisite and mysterious ice formations.

St. Elias Alpine Guides offers safe, half day and full day glacier experiences led by certified professional guides. Located near the Kennicott Glacier Lodge, they will escort you out to the Root Glacier, where you’ll strap on mountaineering crampons and actually walk on the ice!

The half-day hike begins with a walk down an old wagon road to the glaciers and the entire hike is a leisurely walk suitable for all levels of expertise. The focus is on enjoying the beauty of the glacial streams and blue glacier ice. Bring your camera for spectacular photos of your close up view of Alaskan glaciers!

For the more adventurous Alaskan hiker, the full day Alaska glacier hike introduces you to the basics of ice climbing. You will hike, explore ice cliffs and enjoy awe inspiring waterfalls and blue pools along the way.

Kennicott Wilderness Guides provides group and private day trips from Kennicott, including daily interpretive tours along the west side of the Kennicott Glacier. For adventure seekers Kennicott Wilderness Guides offer 3 and 5 day hikes, where you will experience glacier crevasses, moulins, and other fascinating canyons.
