Alaska Travel

Flying to McCarthy is certainly the easiest and quickest way to get to Kennicott. It is also a spectacular flight through some of Alaska's most magnificent country. We have a 3600 foot gravel airport located between McCarthy and Kennicott; large enough for many passenger airplanes. It's about a 2 hour flight from Anchorage to McCarthy, about 50 minutes from Glennallen, or 25 minutes from Chitina.

There is daily air service from Chitina to McCarthy three times each day. One flight leaves Chitina at 9:05am, a second flight leaves at 2:45 pm, and a third at 5:45 pm. The cost is about $250 plus tax per person round trip. Call:

WRANGELL MOUNTAIN AIR (800) 478-1160

There is also a scheduled flight from Anchorage on Wednesdays and Fridays. This leaves Anchorage at about 8:15 am. Cost is about $600 per person round trip. Call:

COPPER VALLEY AIR SERVICE (866) 570-4200

Besides these two scheduled flights, there is charter air service to McCarthy from anywhere in Alaska. Typical rates for a 5 passenger airplane one way to McCarthy are:

from Glennallen $660
from Anchorage: $1,560
from Denali NP $1,650
from Valdez: $840

FLY/DRIVE
You might want to experience both the drive and a flight on your trip to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. You can do this by taking a van from Chitina to McCarthy with Backcountry Connections, and flying back to Chitina with Wrangell Mountain Air. This is a great way to see the Park, and can be booked with either company.

However you decide to get to Kennicott, you'll have the opportunity to see some of the best scenery in Alaska. If we can help with your travel arrangements in any way, please write, phone, or email us.
